We’ve been busier than ever this winter, gearing up for exciting new client events, performances and exhibitions, getting involved with national arts advocacy and community-building efforts, and joining a thought-provoking conversation on the future of arts journalism. You can play your part, too! Read on to learn how you can get involved.
Cultural Journalism at a Crossroads
Challenging times for traditional media outlets means reinterpreting and reimagining the landscape of arts journalism. On February 20, Canary Founder & President Megan Wendell will join a distinguished panel that includes Philadelphia Inquirer editor Bill Marimow and Chris Satullo of WHYY for a discussion on “Plotting the Future of Cultural Journalism.” The event is co-presented by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy and WHYY. We’re honored to be part of this important conversation with Philadelphia’s cultural community about what’s happening now and what comes next for arts coverage in our region and beyond. We’ll be live-tweeting the conversation, so make sure to follow us at @canarypromotion.

Advancing the Arts in America
Americans for the Arts is a leading advocacy organization that knows the arts spur economic growth, connect citizens, improve education and are key to quality of life. Megan is thrilled to be supporting this cause by serving on the marketing committee for AFTA’s annual convention, which this year descends on Pittsburgh, another great town for arts and culture. More than 1,000 arts and culture innovators will share the progressive ways leaders are using the arts to build communities across the country. We also plan to soak in the Pittsburgh arts scenewith some time at the Three Rivers Arts Festival taking place the same weekend! Registration is now open onlinefor the convention, which will be held June 14-16, 2013.

A Backward Glance
Though we’re always looking ahead, we had fun looking back on our favorite cultural moments of 2012. Rose reminisces about performance and potluck with Headlong Dance Theater; Carolyn recalls naked rapping in the “gut-bustingly hilarious” BANG; and Megan remembers a special night with family and friends enveloped in the lights and sounds of Open Air.

The search is on for Pennsylvania’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts, presented by the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts. The story is being featured statewide including on Philly.comand WPSU FM. Have an artifact to nominate? Submit it at patop10artifacts.org.
Lantern Theater Company’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane garnered rave reviewsand packed houses. Up next is their always-anticipated interpretation of Shakespeare — this season it’s Henry V, directed by Charles McMahon and starring Philly favorite Ben Dibble in the title role.
The premiere of internationally renowned artist Tacita Dean’s new workat Arcadia University Art Gallery is the first must-see exhibition of the year, covered by a variety of national press including The Art Newspaper.
