Our Favorite Cultural Moments of 2010: TEDxPhilly
The Canary Promotion staff shares some favorite experiences from the past year. Some are Canary clients; some are not. How lucky are we to work in an environment that fosters so much creativity, artistic community and cultural diversity?

Attending TEDxPhilly was my thought-provoking cultural community highlight of the year. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment & Design, the x stands for localized organization of the larger TED brand. The theme for Philadelphia’s event was “Right Here, Right Now”, a poignant view on the change makers of our city.
Held at the amazingly beautiful and awe-inspiring Kimmel Center, this event brought together some of the greatest minds our city has to offer, from a wide range of diverse industries and backgrounds. Forcing people to sit and listen – really listen – to what was being presented, by barring laptops and minimizing use of cell phones, hundreds of attendees sat in rapt attention, thousands joined the online livestream, and everyone found themselves mesmerized by 18 beautifully curated talks that might just revolutionize our city, one brilliant idea at a time.
When I think back to that day, I remember being exhausted and rejuvenated at the same time. I remember being inspired by the people around me – from organizers to attendees, to volunteers. I remember that the idea of changing the world didn’t seem quite so impossible that day, and that the reality of change in Philadelphia is coming to fruition all around us. I experienced the infamous “TEDCrash” first-hand and required several days of recovery during which I processed all that had happened throughout the TED experience. I think I might still be processing the wealth of information and ideas I received that day, and I know for sure our creative and cultural landscape is still experiencing the after-effects.
When pressed to share which video had the most impact on my experience, I started creating a list, and promptly realized I had listed just about everyone who spoke at the conference. The videos are available online at TEDxPhilly.com/videos and I highly recommend you start the day as we did back in November, with Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, a self proclaimed nerd and a nationally recognized poet, who fired up the crowds starting with a rousing poem about President Taft. Bringing a sense of humor to the experience of trying to make a living out of artistic passion, her parting words, “Be bold; love what you love, chase your biggest and most ambitious dreams… make room in your life for opportunity” were the epitome of my TEDxPhilly experience.
