The Philadelphia Art Alliance invites the public to celebrate its centerpiece fall exhibition, Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen’s The Way of Chopsticks,on Thursday, September 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the historic Rittenhouse gallery. A site-specific three-story installation of innovative sculpture and video, The Way of Chopsticks explores domestic life, modern family life and cultural shifts in contemporary China.
The Art Alliance’s former role as a private residence has inspired the internationally renowned Beijing-based husband-and-wife artists to come to Philadelphia with their 11-year-old daughter to create a new series of their famous chopstick sculptures, as well as a video installation that explores the evolution of family dynamics from 1970s China under Mao Zedong to the only-child-oriented present day.
In addition to the opening reception, the Philadelphia Art Alliance is hosting a variety of exhibition-related programming this fall, including artist talks, food tastings, tours, family workshops and performances. (A full list of events can be found at philartalliance.org/the-way-of-chopsticks-events.)
The Way of Chopsticks has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Additional funding comes from the Mindspring Foundation and the Asian Cultural Council. Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen are represented by Chambers Fine Art in New York City and Beijing.
