On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Old City’s The Clay Studio will invite 50Philadelphia schoolchildren to create a colorful Claymation video inspired by King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Hosted by The Clay Studio’s Claymobile Outreach Program and organized with the Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association, the hands-on Claymation workshop is one of the Claymobile’s innovative, hands-on art projects developed over 20 years of bringing the fun and inspiration of clay into Philadelphia public schools.
Claymation is a popular stop-motion animation technique that creates continuous motion through the manipulation of clay sculptures. A 10- to 15-second version of the children’s 2014 video will be available to be shared online or in broadcast by 4 p.m. on January 20. The 2013 Martin Luther King Day video is viewable here.
The Clay Studio’s gallery is also currently exhibiting Claymobile Creations: 20 Years of Building Imagination, featuring more than 200 works in clay from Philadelphia schoolchildren who have participated in the program.
