Third Time’s the Charm: Congratulations to the 43 winners of the 2013 Knight Arts Challenge!
On Monday night at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a who’s-who of the city’s arts-and-culturati gathered to celebrate the winners of the 2013 Knight Arts Challenge.
Created by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the program is now in its third year — and this round of newly funded projects is just as innovative and inspiring as the previous two, from a bike-rack design contest and live dance pop-ups to technology-enhanced live music and a participatory environmental art installation.
The press has already taken notice: The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Stephan Salisbury interviewed winner Lee Ann Etzold on her project to foster community connections between two geographically close but culturally diverse neighborhoods by producing a piece of theater created in collaboration with its residents; and Broadway World published an article on Anna Deveare Smith’s upcoming two-year residency at the Philadelphia Theatre Company.
Including this year’s 43 winners, the Knight Foundation has supported a whopping 114 Philadelphia projects through the challenge since 2011; Monday night’s celebration underlined the key role the foundation has had in elevating the city’s cultural credibility. The event also gave challenge winners a chance to shine: Monday’s 300-plus attendees were treated to a powerful piece by students in the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement, which won a challenge grant in 2011; and a gorgeous Mozart performance by the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, the only organization to win funding three years in a row.
The 2013 winners include many Canary clients both past and present:
· Ars Nova Workshop, honoring Philadelphia’s rich jazz legacy by producing a month-long festival in venues across the city
· FringeArts, igniting imaginations around the future of environmental conservation by creating a large and visually stunning art installation along the Delaware River
· Philadelphia Young Playwrights, helping students gain a deeper understanding of how to leverage theater for social change by expanding a festival featuring professional productions of high school students’ monologues
· Pig Iron Theatre Company, merging two indie-arts genres by translating the music of the rock band Dr. Dog into a theatrical spectacle
· Swim Pony Performing Arts, pushing the boundaries for audiences by curating a series of cross-disciplinary events that feature unexpected collaborations
