Philly 101 Wrap Party @ Frankford Hall: What You Wish You Knew, Now You Know
Last week, Megan and I headed to Fishtown for Uwishunu’s Philly 101 wrap party at Frankford Hall. Armed with a boot full of Yards Saison and German-style soft pretzels the size of our arms, we met a ton of great folks involved with the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation (GPTMC)’s latest initiative, to produce 101 short videos in 101 days that ask fascinating Philadelphians one key question: What’s the one thing you wish more people in Philly knew about?
According to Penny Balkin Bach, executive director of the Association for Public Art (aPA), more city-dwellers ought to know that all it takes to learn about Philly’s vast collection of public art is a stroll and a cell phone. The aPA’s Museum Without Walls: AUDIO tour, available for download, is a totally free and accessible way to educate yourself on all of our city’s outdoor sculpture — from the modern behemoth Iroquois near the Art Museum to that giant clothespin on 15th Street.
Since aPA is a Canary Promotion client, we’re particularly proud of Penny’s contribution to the Philly 101 series. (We also hear she was one of the sharpest on-camera shooters, taking only two takes to get the job done.) But from restaurateurs’ favorite snacks to Mayor Nutter’s crush on City Hall, Philly 101 is full of reminders of what makes the City of Brotherly Love such a lovely place to live and visit.
Some things I learned about Philly in between rounds of Jenga: Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens creator Isaiah Zagar never takes a day off; Greensgrow’s Mary Seton Corboy is a huge fan of Temple’s Sexy Green Truck; Martha Graham Cracker spends her free weekends at Linvilla Orchards; and the Phillie Phanatic is from the Galapagos Islands. Who knew?
