There’s outsider art, and then there’s art that’s enjoyed outside. Here at Canary, we’re all set to embrace the outdoors this summer with a roundup of staff picks where you can soak in the art and the sunshine at the same time.

I’m excited to see the new outdoor sculpture Symbiosis, by artist Roxy Paine, installed near my Fairmount neighborhood. The 34-foot-tall piece is now installed at the northeast end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Even though it’s temporary (on a one-year loan arranged by the Association for Public Art), Paine’s majestic dendroids – giant stainless-steel forms that resemble trees or branching neurons - will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood, joining the golden Joan of Arc statue and bright orange Iroquois and other works of public art on our doorstep.

By now you’ve probably heard about psychylustro, Mural Arts’ brand-new work of art that’s composed of seven massive splashes of neon color between Philly’s 30th Street and North Philly stations. Berlin-based artist Katharina Grosse’s latest work is meant to be viewed from a moving SEPTA, Amtrak or NJ Transit train, illuminating an otherwise dull commute and perhaps making you think twice about art’s place in the world. But did you know that there are a few select spots where you can view psychylustro while standing still? Some passages are visible from car/pedestrian bridges in North Philly, so if you’re looking for an adventure in a new-to-you neighborhood or want to test out your zoom lens, head to the West Oxford Street bridge (between West Glenwood Avenue and 32nd Street), the West Diamond Street bridge (between West Sedgley Avenue and West Glenwood Avenue) or the Margie Street bridge (between West Sedgley Avenue and West Glenwood Avenue). Don’t forget to reserve your bragging rights on Twitter and Instagram by using the #psychylustro hashtag!

Laurel Hill Cemetery maintains its destination profile with unique programming — their June calendar alone offers yoga in the cemetery, a movie under the stars, and a gothic americana concert. I’m looking at the June 29 walking tour “To Set Them Free: Abolition of Slavery at Laurel Hill,” as an outdoor history briefing for further perspective on the Constitution Center’s “Slavery at Jefferson’s Monticello.”
